Dow Microbial Control (DMC), a business unit of The Dow Chemical Co., has introduced Silvadur™ Antimicrobial, a new microbial control technology that provides long-lasting freshness and reliable protection against unwanted bacteria that can cause unpleasant odors, decay, rot and discoloration in fabrics.
Silvadur combines the outstanding efficacy and safety of silver—a trusted antimicrobial agent for more than 2,000 years—with an innovative polymeric delivery system that delivers silver ions onto fabric surfaces in a controlled and intelligent manner when undesirable bacteria is present. It performs intelligently at each stage of the supply chain. Manufacturers can create items that offer unmatched performance with intelligent protection at reduced dosages using standard formulations and applications, while brand owners and retailers can design products that feature intelligent freshness and remain active through 50 washings or more.
Silvadur antimicrobials are offered in an easy-to-apply liquid formulation and can be processed in multiple methods, including pad and exhaust applications. The products are compatible with both natural and synthetic fibers, and a broad range of common textile chemical additives, detergents and other finishing treatments. Silvadur also has been assessed and certified by the International Oeko-Tex® Association. The products are registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the active ingredient is notified and supported under the EU Biocidal Products Registry (BPR). In addition, the technology is registered to meet REACH requirements in the European Union.
