Short chain PFCs offer equal performance, says FluoroCouncil

The FluoroCouncil, an organization made up FluoroTechnology companies, has published a guide that it says can help mills and finishers minimize waste, and which includes questions brands and retailers should be asking their suppliers.

FluoroTechnology products offer performance properties for durable water repellent finishes that provide water repellency, oil repellency, stain resistance and soil release, with abrasion resistant finishes for apparel and equipment.

“The FluoroCouncil and its members’ commitment to sustainability is underscored by the group’s work with regulatory authorities and other stakeholders worldwide to innovate and drive increasingly sustainable FluoroTechnology solutions, including newly developed short-chain products,” said the group. “A significant volume of data has been developed and rigorously evaluated by industry and regulators, supporting the conclusion that these short-chain products offer equivalent performance with improved environmental and human health profiles.”

Jessica Bowman, executive director of the FluoroCouncil, added: “For more than a decade, FluoroCouncil member companies have been investing in research and development to promote environmental responsibility among industries that rely on FluoroTechnology products to meet the dynamic needs of their customers while being mindful of the environment, human health and safety.”

The document, Guidance for Best Environmental Practices (BEP) for the Global Apparel Industry: Including Focus on Fluorinated Repellent Products, is available in English, Chinese, Japanese and German.
