South Korean technology company LG Innotek has developed a concept textile that can be used to measure the pressure on a surface. The material can be bent and folded, giving it a significant advantage over other commercial pressure sensors and making it suitable for use in clothing and accessories.
The LG sensor is made from a highly elastic polyurethane material that bends for a comfortable fit on the body. The material can be inserted between electronic fibers, and when an external force is applied to the sensory fabric, the electronic fibers can detect the deformation caused and determine the pressure being applied.
According to LG, the product is extremely durable and can be used in various environments. The company says it will work for over 240 hours in a temperature range from -40 degrees to 80 degrees C. An average man of 70kg could sit on the sensor 100,000 times before it became unsuitable for use.
The company says that the product would be particularly suited to the medical and automotive markets.
