Biopack offers use, plant and grow packaging

Greek designer George Bosnas thinks the traditional waste management process is lengthy and uses a lot of energy. In response, he created the sustainable approach to a traditionalegg carton – the Biopack. For this designer, an alternative to “reduce, reuse, recycle” is “use, plant, grow.”

According to an Inspiralistarticle, Bosnas was looking for a way to create a package that didn’t require large-scale manufacturing, has no chemical components and doesn’t harm the environment. Biopack is made of cleared paper pulp, flour, starch and seeds. Four eggs rest safely inside the dense material. 

After using the eggs, instead of discarding or recycling the box, users are encouraged to plant and water it so the legume seeds that are part of the box can grow. In about 30 days, the result is robust, nitrogen-fixing legume seedlings. 

Production of the packaging is expected to begin by the end of 2019.
