Global textile and apparel provider Makalot Industrial Co. Ltd., baseds in Taiwan, says that it’s setting a new benchmark for sustainable manufacturing as it advances toward its Net Zero 2050 commitment.

The textile and apparel industry contributes approximately 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 1.7 billion tons of CO₂ annually. In the last few years, Makalot has taken decisive actions to tackle these challenges:

  1. Accomplishing a 25.5 percent reduction in carbon emissions per unit.
  2. Making a 50 percent transition to green power usage through the installation of solar panels and renewal energy integration with i-REC investment.
  3. Has exceeded its fossil fuel phase-out goal with a 65 percent target and reached an 84 percent reduction.
  4. Achieved an average Higg vFEM score of 75 percent across 17 owned factories, verified by third-party auditors.
  5. Earned prestigious certifications, including ISO 14064-1 verification by LRQA and sustainability reporting assured by KPMG Taiwan.

Additionally, in 2024, the company embraced upcycling practices to reduce waste and source materials responsibly and has achieved notable success in other areas, such as:

  1. 71 percent of cotton purchases were certified sustainable, supporting initiatives like the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and Organic Content Standard (OCS), which ensure responsible farming practices, improved environmental outcomes, and traceable sourcing for a more transparent supply chain.
  2. 37 percent of polyester content incorporated into fabric production was recycled, reducing resource dependency.
  3. Implemented comprehensive waste management programs across its facilities in Vietnam and Cambodia.
  4. Fabric is upcycled in collaboration with suppliers into alternative products like construction materials and accessories, minimizing landfill contributions.

Makalot has embraced a proactive approach to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration, delivering impactful initiatives to protect natural ecosystems, including planting 16,600 trees along Taiwan’s coastline, implementing comprehensive coastal protection projects, and partnering with local conservation organizations to promote chemical fertilizer and pesticide-free farming methods in national wetlands to reduce toxicity and make wetlands a paradise for biodiversity.

The company has also engaged employees and suppliers in conservation activities, such as environmental education activities and reforestation efforts, to foster ecological accountability across the value chain.
