Spiber Inc. has begun operations under a new management structure, “New Spiber.” The biotechnology venture was originally established in 2007 and headquartered in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The company is known for its synthetic spider silk using fermentation technology and other bio-based materials.
In a company press release, it notes that it “has been dedicated to creating innovative solutions aimed at contributing to sustainable well-being and addressing environmental challenges.” It also says that it continues to receive support, including the continuation of joint research and development initiatives, from partners who resonate with the vision of the New Spiber.
The new governance framework enhances management transparency while achieving both rapid decision-making and rigorous risk management. Renewal of Management and Governance Maya Kawana, representative director and CEO, will assume full responsibility for business strategy and company-wide governance, leading efforts toward early monetization of operations.
Kazuhide Sekiyama and Junichi Sugahara, the founders of Spiber, will step back from frontline management and focus on “immediate resolution of technical challenges” and “accelerating product development and commercialization,” leveraging their deep technical expertise. This structure ensures continuity in research and development while enabling the rapid elimination of technical bottlenecks for social implementation.
