MycoWorks, a biotechnology company based in Emeryville, Calif., has released the latest performance data for its mycelium-based biomaterial, Reishi™. The material has also launched commercially on its e-commerce site HERE.
Through a collaborative effort between MycoWorks’ San Francisco, Calif.-based Innovation Center, and MycoWorks’ tannery experts in Igualada, Spain, the company has rolled out Rei-Tanning™ technology. The formula enhances the performance consistency of Reishi sheets, enabling the production of luxury goods with intricate construction techniques, including stitch-and-turn and edge applications.
Latest Reishi by MycoWorks performance results
Testing was conducted by CTC Groupe on Feb. 14, 2025, on MycoWorks’ Reishi (with Rei-Tanning applied) grown at the company’s plant in South Carolina. The tests revealed achievements in new standards in five qualitative evaluation areas, including:
- Bally Flex resistance (flexibility, creasing): till 20,000 cycles**
- Martindale abrasion resistance: till 25,600 cycles**
- Colorfastness (dye transfer): Reishi has passed the 200 cycles** for the dry rub test (Veslic)
- Ageing test at 50 C (122 F) and 90% R.H.: Pass
- Finish adhesion: Reishi has reached 0.5N/mm**
**Results achieved with the Reishi Aura finishing, other Reishi finishing results are available on demand.
MycoWorks’ strategic partner, Ligne Roset, has also conducted proprietary tests on Reishi in its internal lab. These tests included the Martindale abrasion resistance test (up to 50,000 cycles) and a sitting simulation test that replicates a 100 kg (220 lb) human body for over 25,000 cycles.
MycoWorks’ mycelium-based biomaterials are now available for purchase online. The site has multiple options for samples including:
- The Reishi Sample Kit with swatches of material
- Single Reishi™ sheet purchases (up to five sheets can be ordered per SKU)
- Larger orders ranging from 15–50 sheets of Reishi per SKU
