Costco picks OEKO-TEX® standard for product screening

EcoNote | February 26, 2018 | By:

Costco has announced a partnership with the Hohenstein Group to integrate STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification into its Smart Screening Program to ensure safe, traceable and sustainable products. The program is designed to protect consumer and environmental health by removing chemicals of concern (COCs) from the products offered in Costco stores worldwide.

Used by manufacturers, brands and retailers worldwide, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is an independent verification that products have been tested for harmful substances. Suppliers with this certification are now eligible for exemption from the additional product-testing portion of the Costco Smart Screening protocol. The company is, thereby, encouraging material manufacturers and suppliers to take control of chemical management as far back in the supply chain as possible. This ensures that better and greener chemistry begins at the factory and flows to the consumer.

OEKO-TEX® provides standardized solutions which optimize customers’ manufacturing processes and help deliver high quality, more sustainable products. To date, 10,000 manufacturers, brands, and retailers in nearly 100 countries are working with OEKO-TEX® to ensure that their products are tested for potentially harmful substances.
