Transparent, halogen-free aqueous FR coating developed

Three Japanese companies have collaborated to develop a new aqueous, transparent flame-retardant coating. Landex Coat Flame Retardant Clear is the joint project of Dainichi Giken Co. Ltd., Daimaru Kogyo Co. Ltd. and Teijin Ltd.

The new product is a halogen-free acrylic coating that can be applied to the surfaces of timber, paper, fiber, rubber and plastic. Application of the coating will not impair the material’s original texture, according to information provided by Teijin Ltd.

The new coating uses FCX-210, Teijin’s phosphorus flame retardant made with the company’s proprietary molecular design technology, which maintains the original properties of base resins using only small amounts. FCX-210 is used widely in electronics and automobile parts and its use is expanding to other markets, including architecture and interior design.

The companies say the coating maintains the color shades and textures of materials for use in living spaces and can strengthen resistance to weather and mold.
