A new, 99+ percent biodegradable, down puffy jacket collaboration is a 2024 ISPO Award winner. ALLIED Feather + Down, Vernon, Calif., providers of high performance, ethically sourced and recycled down, worked in partnership with global performance wear manufacturer Active Apparel Group and luxury outdoor performance brand Templa, based in Antwerp and Melbourne. The first release in ALLIED’s Future Now: Designing to Disappear program, the Templa jacket will fully biodegrade.
Made with biodegradable 800 fill power down insulation, combined with biodegradable synthetic fabrics and trims sourced by AAG and performance silhouettes from Templa, this new jacket is designed to disappear completely from the planet when placed in an anaerobic environment for approximately five years.
Matthew Betcher, creative director with ALLIED, said, “As a renewable, biodegradable by-product of the food supply chain, down is supremely suited for use in any sustainability minded apparel program. Not only is it biodegradable, but it is recyclable and boasts an exceedingly low carbon footprint as a raw material.”
Anati Rakocz, founding partner with Templa, said, “For us, this project is more than just an interesting silhouette or new technology; it is about making responsible choices for meaningful change. And we’re grateful that our efforts, alongside AAG and Allied Feather + Down, have been acknowledged by our industry leaders, reinforcing our belief in the power of collaboration for the greater good.”
The B Corp-certified Active Apparel Group draws from an extensive network of materials sourcing experts and leverages superior craftsmanship in manufacturing to produce the jacket. All fill, trims and fabrics are 99+ percent biodegradable, as tested by Amni Soul Eco® by Solvay and CiCLO®.
The jacket was displayed during the sports industry trade show, ISPO, December 3-5 in the Award Exhibition Area.
